Holding onto Faith with Our Son in a Coma - Karla's Caregiver Story

March 22, 2019 by Hope After Head Injury Leave a Comment

“Our son, Taylor, has been in a coma since Nov 17th. He moved from Georgia to California for work. Only to be there for about 2 years. He builds movie sets for a living, loves his job. On Nov 11 he was doing a side job for Universal/Associated Group. The work truck was overloaded, incorrectly, top heavy with no driver. He was forced to drive this truck, which careened 60ft from a u pin over pass exit, due to being so top heavy. Taylor had to be cut out with the Jaws of life. His body severely broken up (broken: 8 ribs, pelvis, both hips, shoulder, ocular bone, nose, ankle, & punctured lung) & damaged but recoverable. The hospital, the ambulance took him to, mishandled & neglected him on multiple levels. Not the ICU team, but after. After 6 days he was moved to the watch floor for less than 24 hours, even with them KNOWING he had a previous TBI in 2015. Then he was, irresponsibly, ordered to the discharge floor. Still no name given as to who ordered that.

That floor was NOT AT ALL capable of handling a patient in Taylor's condition. They banged his head, multiple times, moving him to a different bed & left him with his head at a downward decline with him screaming he could feel blood rushing to his head. He then went unresponsive for almost 10 minutes without air. Still about 20 staff, standing around, CLEARLY oblivious as to what to do. He was, FINALLY, rushed in for THREE emergency craniotomies, Nov 17th. We were then told a brain bleed was missed on his original scan. One of his main ICU surgeons, just by chance, happen to come into the waiting room during his brain surgery. After the conversation, HE was furious & stated that NEVER should have happened, he should NEVER have been on the discharge floor. We certainly knew that.

Throughout all this I kept begging them for more scans, due to his previous TBI, & to move him to a brain specific hospital. TIRR Hermann in Houston TX, where we understand they specialize in waking him, we're desperate to get him to. Then hopefully to Shepherd in Atlanta. We are desperately trying to raise funds for him to be moved, but a lot of those funds are having to be spent on flights & hotels /Airbnb to be with him. So getting the funds built up is a constant starting over at the beginning. We have zero family or friends in California to visit, talk, pray with Taylor. Every patient needs that to thrive.

We know God has given him many mini miracles. We're grateful for each one. In the meantime, we're still waiting on the big one! Please pray miracle prayers for our sweet son, & so many others that need that as well.

Karla, Caregiver

Our sweet son is the most giving & loving soul. We know God has a plan for his precious unfinished life. But while he's in California, in this coma at Ronald Reagan UCLA, we desperately need help to be able to continue to help him. He is at Ronald Reagan UCLA in California. The case worker, Joe Lavy at UCLA, has submitted his case to TIRR & they have accepted him. But that process will have to be duplicated due to complications with his condition. 99 out of 100 are dead that suffered what Taylor has suffered. The money to get him to TIRR is what we're trying to raise. As of today, workman's comp has still not accepted his case but our WC atty is on it & we're trying not to be worried. & yes we have a medical negligence atty as well. He COULD qualify for Shepherd but the program they have is short for someone still in a coma. TIRR will work with him as long as necessary. THEN once he can participate in PT, on to Shepherd... & to start the fund raising all over again. It's that assistance we need, the financial end as we also are in a bind financially flying back & forth & finding places to stay since we live in GA.

It's been 4 months that our son has been in a coma...I do know that my heart & soul would remain shattered, broken, dark & angry if it weren't for that mustard seed of faith. This mountain sure seems to remain unmovable so far (so far) .... Or maybe I'm praying about the wrong mountain. Sure wish God would just give me a list of instructions.

It has been a journey & this is only a snippet of his story. We know God has given him many mini miracles. We're grateful for each one. In the meantime, we're still waiting on the big one! Please pray miracle prayers for our sweet son, & so many others that need that as well. God must be used to us keeping Him busy. Thank you.”
